Procumbents. Tumbling and Scrambling. The term ‘ground cover’ is used commonly for various different garden plants but there are not many roses that truly cover the ground in the way this title would imply. Instead, I prefer the title of Procumbent Roses, describing their arching, wide growing habit much better.Their uses are manifold from spilling down banks, hiding unsightly manhole covers and tumbling over walls, some will even be happy in hanging baskets. In the right position they can be encouraged to climb and the larger varieties will easily grow into established hedges where they will provide both colour and density in growth. Most of the Procumbents have small flowers in all sorts of colours and some are scented.
